The Haflinger Horse

Cinch Magazine

The Haflinger descends from the mountain ponies of the Alps. For centuries, they were used for transportation, to plow the rugged fields, pull logs, and pack up steep mountain trails- even long after the industrial revolution! The Haflinger was bred for hardiness, temperament and longevity. Only horses that could be handled by all members of the family were bred, attributing to the modern-day Haflinger's willing, docile and friendly personality.
All Haflingers have a very similar characteristic appearance- well-shaped head (which sometimes reflects its Arabian ancestry), delicate nostrils, wide eyes, and a friendly, intelligent expression set on an elegant neck. The coat varies from a beautiful blonde chestnut to a dark chocolate brown, with a heavy white mane and tail. The mane commonly falls double on the neck naturally.
The haflinger stands between 13 and 15hh. Though it is tempting to call him a pony, he most certainly is not. The Haflinger is often referred to as a "prince in the front, a peasant behind", due to his elegant head and strong, muscular quarters- attributes to this hardworking breed.

Resistant to disease, easy to acclimate, willing to work, and equipped with a strong character, the Haflinger can do anything with a smile!

Today, in North America, there are over 10,000 Haflingers- and the number is continually growing! Breeders, turning over to Haflingers for the first time remark on not just their physical appeal and people-oriented personalites, but also on their intelligence, boldness and resilience. The Haflinger has even become commonplace in the hippo-therapy industry because of their quickness to learn and sensibility.
The Haflinger has found its place on the trails, in combined driving, dressage, jumping, cross-country  and many western events too- making it one of the most versatile horses in the world!
There are two strains of Haflingers-the heavy, draft type, most suited to field-work, driving and county fairs. Then there is the popular modern Haflinger, at home doing just about anything! He is most renowned as being a superb driving horse, jumper (with very correct form), and serious dressage mount due to his long, animated, flowing stride. But most of all, the Haflinger is a blessed friend and companion.
The Haflinger's cheerful, willing personality makes him a horse for everyone! He is strong enough to carry a large adult, and gentle enough for the most timid child. Over the centuries of living close to the family, the Haflinger's temperament has developed into one that is not simply unflappable, but also outgoing and engaging! It is said that a "Haflinger can do anything with a smile".
New owners who switch to Haflingers are discovering their horse's intelligence, quickness to learn, and utter desire to please. But they are only just discovering what Austrian owners have know for centuries- that when it comes to looks, ability and versatility, it's hard to beat the blonde Haflinger of the Alps!

Thanks to Haflinger Horses for allowing us use of their wonderful photos!
