The Thoroughbred Horse

The Thoroughbred has long been hailed as the fastest horse in the world. The breed is elegant, powerful and heart-stopping to watch.

The Thoroughbred is generally bay, chestnut, black, gray or roan in colouration and stands and average of 15 to 17hh, although it is not uncommon for horses to be found slightly above or below this height.

The Thoroughbred has a generous length of rein, with a refined head equipped with bold, intelligent eyes. Depth through the girth, with well-sloped shoulders and a short back are called for to achieve the maximum galloping thrust the breed is renowned for. The Thoroughbred has muscular hindquarters, straight legs and well-set hocks.

The Thoroughbred, is of course, most notable for his excellence on the track in the sport of horseracing, but he's also successful in hunter/jumper competitions and eventing, although his level of success in dressage has waned.

There has been much concern recently as to the weakening of the modern Thoroughbred strains through the breeding of weak racehorses in order to fulfull short-lived but successful racing careers. Breed enthusiasts are making conscientous efforts to reverse this trend, and set the breed back to its former glory.
